Linz is the third largest city in Austria.

History

Founding

The area where now stands the city of Linz, south of the Danube River was populated as early as 4000 B.C. Records from that era are obviously almost nonexistent, but archaeological evidence indicates that around this time, a number of small dirt mining settlements were established. Dirt mining was a primary source of income for people in this region at this time. Modern commerce as we think of it was not understood at this time, so the people simply mined dirt, was sold on the open marketplace, though it had very few uses.
