Dr. Igor Tetrisov was a Russian scientist, specializing in the study of the behavior of colonial insect populations. Based on his observations of ant colonies, he created an interactive computer program to run different simulations of colony behaviors. The program was not a good research tool, but with a bit of tweaking, Dr. Tetrisov's colleagues greatly enjoyed using the program as a game. They began referring to it as Tetrisov's game which was later shorted to just Tetris. Dr. Tetrisov began marketing his game in the mid 1980s, a time at which video games were becoming quite popular. He became quite wealthy, which was unusual in Soviet Russia, particularly near the end of the Cold War, when the Soviet economy was quiet bad.
