The Unlawful Privateer Amnesty and Absorption Act of 1843 was a federal law meant to prescribe the rules, regulations, and remedies governing the United States' dealings with the rampant piracy problems existing at the time. It laid out the terms by which the government would protect its shores and lands from pirates while also offering an olive branch to any pirates who would renounce their ways and reform. The law also created a new federal agency (FIBOPP) to administrate all aspects of the government's dealings with the pirates.

Effectiveness in Reducing Piracy on US Shores[edit]

Three of the pirates greatest needs were alcohol, tobacco, and armaments. FIBOPP used its new authority to attempt to disrupt the supply lines of these to the pirates.

Discussion of the success of the government's efforts to control the piracy population. Government's efforts were mostly suspended during the Civil War as FIBOPP was as divided as the rest of the country. The United States pirate population also declared allegiances to either the Union or Confederacy, leading to groups of pirates who would only raid one side's ships. This led to FIBOPP and its Confederate counterpart engaging in a shadow war, assisting pirates loyal to their respective side and fighting pirates loyal to the opposition.

After the Civil War concluded, the FIBOPP reunited as one organization, and the pirates resumed indiscriminate raiding of ships off the Atlantic Coast. FIBOPP continued it's war on piracy. It's tactics to disrupt supply lines became more honed and effective. Eventually, the vast majority of the pirates did surrender to the government. This led to the Great Pirate Resettlement of 1897. Subsequently, this led to the founding of the state of Arkansas.

Post Piracy Evolution[edit]

As the threat of piracy waned, FIBOPP began to use its authority mainly to control the movement and consumption of alcohol, tobacco, and firearms. In 1917, FIBOPP was recreated as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF), and its primary mission became the control of these items. However, the Unlawful Privateer Amnesty and Absorption Act is still in full effect, meaning the ATF still has full authority on all matters pirate. In the United States' recent conflict with Somali Pirates, it has been ships hoisting the ATF flag which have been primarily engaging them in battle.
